RHYD-Y-CAR Ironworkers Houses
Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan

Built around 1800 Re-erected 1987
at The Museum of Welsh Life,
St. Fagans

Richard Crawshay, one of the great ironmasters of the nineteenth century, built these dwellings to provide housing for the workers in his iron-ore mine. Although the ironworkers were considered among the cream of Merthyr's working class community, the cottages had to wait sixty years before facilities such as piped water and toilets were installed.

The six houses have been displayed at different periods of their history allowing Museum visitors to view the changes to the buildings, their contents and their gardens.
